Your Weekly Dose of Storytelling for Feb 11, 2025

*What’s the fastest way to make your audience care about your story?*

**Make it about them.**

Most people tell stories from their own perspective: *”Here’s what happened to me.”* But if you want your audience to truly engage, flip the script. Make them see *themselves* in your story.

*Here’s why it works:* Neuroscience shows that when we hear a story that feels personally relevant, our brain’s **default mode network** activates. This is the part of the brain responsible for self-reflection and empathy. In other words, when a story feels like *our* story, we pay more attention and remember it longer.

**Here’s your challenge today:** Rewrite a story you tell often–but this time, frame it around your audience.

For example:
Instead of: *”I struggled with public speaking until I learned this technique.”*
Try: *”Have you ever felt your heart race before speaking in front of a crowd? I used to feel the same way–until I learned this one technique.”*

See the difference? The second version pulls the audience in by making them the main character. It’s no longer just *your* story–it’s *theirs*, too.

*Remember*: The best stories aren’t about the storyteller. They’re about the listener.

So, how will you make your next story about *them*?
